The National Curriculum for PE states that pupils should be taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres; use a range of strokes effectively (e.g. front crawl, backstroke and breastroke) and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

We prioritise these skills because swimming in not just a sport or leisure activity – it is a life-saving skill. Being able to swim confidently helps ensure children are safe in various water environments, whether it is pools, lakes or the sea. It also provides opportunities for lifelong physical fitness and well-being. Furthermore, learning safe self-rescue techniques prepares children to handle unexpected situations and emergencies with greater confidence and control. By embedding these essential skills into our school curriculum, we aim to promote safety, resilience and independence, equipping all children to thrive beyond their time in primary education.
