English and Phonics
We have recently begun a new whole school English programme called Read to Write to support the development of our pupil’s language, literacy and communication skills. The Read to Write programme provides the children with high-quality teaching through high quality literature.
Each unit is centred on two key texts which are engaging and vocabulary rich. The children have really enjoyed learning the new texts. They provide plenty of opportunities for children to develop their writing skills within and across the curriculum. Each unit is full of exciting ideas for writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Phonics
At Callands Primary Academy, our Phonics curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all children, so that they become fluent, confident and competent readers and writers. To ensure this happens, we follow the award-winning Ready Steady Phonics by Literacy Counts, a DfE-validated systematic synthetic phonics programme. The programme is research-informed and impact-proven, supporting children in developing the knowledge and skills needed to decode, comprehend and enjoy reading. We follow the progression document, which systematically develops children’s understanding of phonics and ensures that phonics is taught daily, through a clear four-part lesson structure that builds children's understanding incrementally.
Children are taught to apply their phonics knowledge in both reading and writing. Ready Steady Phonics support this and provide engaging and meaningful texts for children to decode and discuss. These decodable texts are available in print and online, by scanning a QR code.
We have a skilled Early Reading and Phonics Lead in our school who is responsible for Ready Steady Phonics, monitoring, supporting the practice and ensuring fidelity to the Ready Steady Phonics programme.
Children who require additional support access targeted intervention through Ready Steady Go sessions, ensuring no child is left behind. We also prioritise language development and reading for pleasure across our curriculum, recognising that both are key to reading success. Our aim is to help every child see themselves as a reader for life.
